In an effort to address the growing need to provide guidance and support to an increasing number of relatives caring for children, the Resource Parent Mentor Program, in coordination with the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, piloted a program in the Eastern Mountain Region for relative caregivers. The pilot mirrors the Resource Parent Mentor Program both in terms of purpose and practice and is currently being provided in Letcher and Pike Counties. There relative caregivers who have recently had children placed with them receive a mentor who has experience providing care for a relative’s children. Mentors seek to assist mentees by identifying resources unique to the service region, modeling and encouraging appropriate partnership within the child welfare system, providing emotional support, and sharing practical parenting strategies.
